WAWIBF... Big Ron

27 May 2004

On Wednesday night, football commentator Ron Atkinson befouled himself by referring to Marcel Desailly as 'a fucking lazy thick nigger' at the end of a Chelsea match. And the funny thing was, no-one was more upset than Big Ron himself. "I am absolutely devastated by this," he said later. "I'm annihilated. This is the worst day of my career." Poor fella. It must have been terrible, especially as he had absolutely no control over himself. "It was not an intentional comment," he insisted. "I did not even know I had said it... I had the shock of my life the next day when I was told." So shocked was he by his own errant mind that he immediately asked for and tendered his own resignation.

As you can see, Atkinson has come out with an astonishing amount of crap since his horrible fuck-up, but the best bit has got to be this: "People say it was a racist comment but [nigger] is not a word I ever use or ever have done. I still to this day still cannot explain why I said what I did." Brilliant! Up there with Reagan. And he just keeps on going. He can't shut up about it. "You talk to football people. There are certain places - you are going bang, bang, bang -- and maybe I was thinking like I was in the dressing room, or whatever." But hold on. Didn't you just say... "I have worked with more black players, I would think, than any other manager in the country and I bet none of them has ever heard me say it to them." Well of course they haven't because... "It is unbelievable really... And I must admit I was talking to myself, or with myself, more than anybody, having a pop..." What the hell are you on about, you mad old Nazi?

When push comes to shove, as it clearly has, Ron Atkinson is a fucking idiot. End of story. And despite his protestations, he is, of course, clearly racist. You've only got to listen to his half-arsed quarter-brained back-peddling. Listen: "People in the game know I am no racist. Even the pakis will tell you that..." Oh, Ron.
